Maikel's Mindset Minute: Eliminating Self Sabotage

The strongest prison in the world doesn't use bars, chains or locks. It's the prison we lock ourselves in through our words. Today, we'll break it down!

Have you ever experienced the following:

You set a new goal for yourself and you’re excited. You go all out and you achieve some results from those efforts. At this point you’re incredibly motivated. Everything seems to be going smoothly.

Until…

…At some point self-sabotage happens.

  • You stop doing some of the things that got you progress

  • Some bad habits slip into your routine

  • You start doubting yourself and your goals

  • Perhaps you pick a NEW goal and lose progress on this one

Self sabotage can take many forms, but they all start with your words.

The most common problem I see online is that people use destructive language to describe where they’re at in life. I often read things like “I’m a huge loser, how can I get better?” or “I’m just not disciplined, what can I do to be productive?”.

You might have said similar things about yourself.

And that’s the exact problem!

Take these 4 words to heart:

You Follow Your Words.

When you say something like “I’m such a loser” or “I’m not disciplined”, you probably think that you’re describing your present. This is NOT true! In reality, those words describe your future!

When you say you’re a loser (either to yourself or others), you guarantee you will be!

This has to do with our identity.

Anything you attach to “I am” repetitely is who you become!

And your mind has a need to stay congruent to your identity.

So when you tell yourself and others you’re not disciplined, your mind goes “Gotcha, not disciplined.” When you start becoming more disciplined, your mind stops you saying “Whoah whoah whoah, hold up. You’re not a disciplined person!”.

And then, self sabotage happens.

Step 1 is to change the way you talk to yourself!

But… that’s just 1 of the 6 steps involved.

Have a great day!
